-
An apparatus for measuring the degree of rotation which a beam of polarized light undergoes. It consists of a Nicol prism (polarizer) which polarizes the light, and a second Nicol prism (analyser) which extinguishes the polarized ray. When a substance which rotates the plane of polarization is placed between the prisms, the ray which has been extinguished reappears and the analyser has to be rotated through a certain angle in order again to extinguish it.

-
An apparatus for measuring the degree of polarization, the proportion of polarized light present in a beam of light, or the amount by which the plane of polarization is rotated by the passage of a polarized ray through an optically active substance. See polariscope and saccharimeter. [Lat.]

- An inorganic water-soluble platinum complex. After undergoing hydrolysis, it reacts DNA produce both intra interstrand crosslinks. These crosslinks appear to impair replication and transcription of DNA. The cytotoxicity cisplatin correlates with cellular arrest in G2 phase cell cycle.
