(1823-1893), attained high rank as a historian and writer by a series of works relating to the rise and fall of the French dominion in America. During his later years he was regarded as the foremost of American historians. In the preparation of his series he frequently visited Europe to consult the French archives. It is a work of great candor and fairness, and is notable for its brilliant and graphic style and evidences of careful research. It includes "The Conspiracy of Pontiac," " Pioneers of France in the New World," " The Discovery of the Great West," "The Jesuits in North America," "The Old Regime in Canada," " Count Frontenac and New France under Louis XIV.," " A Half-Century of Conflict," and " Montcalm and Wolfe."
