A German poet; born at Hamburg, Oct. 15, 1748; died at Windebye in Holstein, Jan. 18, 1821. Most of his poems were published with those of his brother Friedrich Leopold in 1779. He wrote two "choral plays", "Balthasar" and "Otanes" (1787); "Poems of Fatherland" (1815); "Poems from the Greek" (1782); and a translation of Sophocles (2 vols., 1787).
