An English poet, novelist, and agitator; born in Berlin, Jan. 25, 1819; died at Manchester, Jan. 26, 1868. He became a leader in the Chartist agitation, to which he sacrificed a large fortune. His prose and poetry were inspired by his political opinions; "The Lass and the Lady" (1854) and "Lord Lindsay" being his best fictions, and "The Battle Day and Other Poems" (1855) containing his most popular songs.
