In 1836 a writ of habeas corpus was served against Captain Eldridge of the brig "Chickasaw," for holding two colored women with the intent of carrying them South. The women were ordered discharged on their presenting free papers. This action against Eldridge resulted from the efforts of Northern people in organizing vigilance committees against kidnapping.
