(1830-1894), represented North Carolina in the U.S. Congress as a State-Rights American from 1858 to 1861. He was colonel of a Confederate regiment from 1861 to 1862; Governor of North Carolina from 1862 to 1864, and greatly aided the Confederate cause. He was again Governor from 1876 to 1879, and was a U.S. Senator from 1879 to 1894.
