An English novelist, son of Pierce the Elder; born in London, 1814; died there, July 6, 1880. At first an artist, he turned to fiction, winning fame with "Robin Hood" (1840), "Wat Tyler" (1841), and similarly conceived romances; while his later and more sensational tales, "Imogen", "Fair Lilias", and others, appeared for the most part as serials only.
