A distinguished American educator and miscellaneous writer; born at North Berwick, Me., Oct. 21, 1823; died in New York, Feb. 23, 1883. He was president of the Massachusetts Agricultural College at Amherst (1867 and 1882); of the University of Wisconsin (1867-70); of Williams College (1872-81). He wrote: "Natural Theology" (1867); "Instinct in Animals and Men" (1872); etc.
