(1796-1881), was editor of the North American Review from 1835 to 1843. He was Secretary of State in Massachusetts from 1844 to 1848, and represented Massachusetts in the U. S. Congress as a Whig from 1847 to 1849. He wrote a valuable " History of New England," a " Life of Colonel William Palfrey " and " The Progress of the Slave Power."
