If three magnitudes are in continued proportion, the ratio of the first to the third is the duplicate or double of the ratio of the first to the second. The duplicate of the ratio of two numbers is the ratio of their squares ; thus, 16 : 25 is the duplicate of the ratio of 4 : 5.
