properly Florent Carton. A French playwright and dramatic artist (1661-1725); born at Fontainebleau. His best low comedies or farces are: "The Fashionable Chevalier"; "The Winsome Gardener". He presents village life with perfect truth, and is master of village patois. Voltaire ranks him next after Moliere for low comedy.
