A West-Indian historian; born at Trois Rivieres, Guadeloupe, in 1692; died at Pointe a Pitre, in 1749. He devoted his leisure to researches upon the Caribs and other Indian tribes, and published several works which are still considered authorities upon the subjects he covered. They include: "History of the Indians" (1739); "The Indians and the Spanish Conquest" (1840); "History and Description of the Caribs, their Condition after the Conquest" (1843); "Civilization of the Indians Compared to their Social Condition" (1845); and "The Incas of Peru and the Spanish Conquest" (1748).
