A title of dignity properly belonging to the chiefs of the Arabic tribes or clans. The heads of monasteries are sometimes called sheiks among the Mohammedans, and it is also the title of the higher order of religious persons who preach in the mosques. The sheik-ul-Islam is the chief mufti at Constantinople. The name is now widely used among Moslems as a title of respect or reverence.
