[L.] Among the Jews, the expounders of the Law, in commentaries known as Midrashim, i.e. searchings. Starting with extreme reverence for the letter of the Law, they came to insist on the paramount authority of its interpreters. Hence the references in the Gospels to the sayings of the men of old time as overriding the Law. See Tabellions.
