Philadelphia. This institution was founded as an academy in 1749, and incorporated in 1755. In 1779 it became a university, finally completing its organization in 1791. The medical department was founded in 1765, and the law department in 1789. Marked progress has been made in recent years since the removal of the university to its present site. The college was at the first befriended by Franklin.
