An aqueous solution of chlorohydric acid gas of s.g. 1-6. The odour of muriatic acid is suffocating; taste very acid and caustic. It is nearly colourless when pure; but commonly of a pale yellow; volatile; the fumes visible. Muriatic acid is possessed of tonic and antiseptic properties. It is used in typhus; cutaneous eruptions; in gargles for inflammatory and putrid sore throats, &c. When added to a pediluvium, it renders it stimulating.
