An American novelist; born in Ellsworth, Me., July 18, 1833. Since 1873 she has resided in Italy, and has published many novels. Among them are: "The House of Yorke" (1872); "A Winged Word" (1873); "Grapes and Thorns" (1874); "Six Sunny Months" (1878): and the remarkable romances "Signor Monaldini's Niece" (1878); "By the Tiber" (1881); "The Jewel in the Lotus" (1884); and "Aurora" (1885).
