An American poet and novelist; born in New York, January 1815; died in France, 1862. Originally a physician, then an Episcopal clergyman, he became a Roman Catholic in 1849, and edited Roman Catholic magazines. He wrote: "Poems" (1843); the striking novels, "Lady Alice, or the New Una", (1849), "Alban, or the History of a Young Puritan" (new ed. 1853, with its sequel "The Forest", 1852), "Blonde and Brunette" (1859); etc.
