An English antiquary and one of the earliest writers on folklore; born at Lulsley, Worcestershire, Oct. 22, 1787; died at Cheltenham, Jan. 29, 1856. He devoted nearly his entire life to the study of Roman and Saxon antiquities in Worcestershire, the results being embodied in his monumental work, "The Ancient British, Roman, and Saxon Antiquities and Folklore of Worcestershire" (1852).
