A German poet and general writer, brother of Christian; born at Bramstedt in Holstein, Nov. 7, 1750; died at Sondermuhlen near Osnabruck, Dec. 5, 1819. Some of his poems were published with those of his brother; separately he issued "lambics" (1784), satires on the manners of the time. He translated the Iliad and some of Plato's "Dialogues", four of Aeschylus's dramas, and "Ossian". In prose he wrote: "The Island" (1788), a romance; "Travels" in Germany, Switzerland, etc. (1794); "Life of Alfred the Great" (1815); "History of the Religion of Jesus Christ" (15 vols., 1806-18).
