Diminutive of canna, 'a reed.' A West India tree. Fam. Magnoliaceae: Sex. Syst. Dodeeandria Monogynia. It is so called because its bark is rolled up like a reed. Cortex Wintera'nus spu'rius, Canella Cuha'na seu Wintera'nia, Cinnamo'mum album, Cortex Antiscorbu'ticus seu Aromat'icus, Costus cortico'sus, Camin'ga, Canella (Ph. U.S.), Canella Bark, (F.) Cakele ou Cauelle blanche, Fausse ecorce de Winter, Ecorce Cariocostine; Ord. Guttiferae, is a pungent aromatic. Its virtues are partly extracted by water; entirely by alcohol. It is a stimulant, and is added to bitters and cathartics.
