(1750-1783), was a prominent and influential patriot of North Carolina. He was secretary of the Mecklenburg Convention of 1775, and is said to have been the author of the famous (alleged) declaration which anticipated by over a year the Declaration of Independence of Congress. He served in the Continental army, and was taken prisoner at Charleston in 1780.
