(1618-1685). In 1673 Charles II granted to the Earl of Arlington and Thomas, Lord Culpepper, the entire territory of Virginia, for thirty-one years, at the yearly rent of thirty shillings. The patents entitled them to all rents and escheats and illegally authorized them to make conveyances in fee simple. Arlington was a member of the so-called "Cabal."
