An eminent English scholar; born at or near York, about 735; died at Tours, France, May 19, 804. One of the most learned men of his time, teacher and intimate adviser of Charlemagne. "Lives of the Saints"; "Poems on the Saints of the Church at York", and a treatise "On Grammar", are among his celebrated works. In Prof. West's "Alcuin" (1893) a full account of his life and work is given.
